Aurel Naray

Aurél Náray (1883, Budapest – 1948, Budapest) was a self-taught Hungarian painter, known especially for his portraits of women and intimate compositions of mothers and children. Trained outside academies, he worked for a short period with painter Zsigmond Vajda, then refined his style through frequent travels and exhibitions. He debuted institutionally at Nemzeti Szalon (1921, 1924), and later exhibited in Europe and the United States, where his post-impressionistic style was appreciated for the naturalness of his gestures and the luminosity of his palette.

Between 1920 and 1940, he was active for a long time in the Maastricht area, a fact visible in certain works with a Dutch atmosphere, but the core of his work remains the portrait: female figures captured in the tranquility of interiors, melancholic gazes, restrained gestures, a calm beauty rendered through free brushstrokes and warm harmonies. He also created family scenes, religious motifs, and episodes of popular life, maintaining a balance between the rigor of drawing and chromatic vibrancy.

Náray preferred clear compositions, centered on face and attitude, with simplified backgrounds that highlight the psychology of the character. In works with mothers and children, the feeling of intimacy is expressed through diffuse light and warm tones, transforming the everyday into an emotional meditation. His work, now present in public and private collections, confirms a discreet but coherent artist who combined the poetry of vision with a sure craftsmanship of color and drawing.
