Nicholas Vermont

Nicolae Vermont (1866–1932), born Nicolae Grünberg, is one of the prominent figures of Romanian painting at the beginning of the 20th century. Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, in the studios of Theodor Aman and G. D. Mirea, and perfected in Munich, Vermont was part of the generation that modernized Romanian art, being a co-founder of the Salon of Independents and an active member of Tinerimea Artistică. His friendship and collaboration with Ștefan Luchian shaped an atmosphere of freedom and rigor where direct observation meets classical refinement.

His work includes genre scenes, portraits, landscapes, and still life paintings, but he is particularly memorable for his social themes: workers, washerwomen, street vendors, and children from the slums. Vermont depicts these faces with dignity and empathy, in a sober realism, illuminated by a warm palette and a clear composition. He also created mural paintings in public and ecclesiastical spaces, bringing a modern decorative flair based on the rhythm of surfaces and chromatic balance.

In his still life paintings of flowers or domestic objects, the artist cultivates a poetry of simplicity: soft lights, well-tempered tones, an inner order that transforms everyday motifs into visual meditations. Precise drawing and clear construction are constants of a style that avoids rhetoric, relying on the truth of observation.

Today, Nicolae Vermont is valued as a classic of Romanian modernity: a painter of measure and humanism, who combined social observation with plastic elegance, leaving a coherent, warm, and profound body of work, present in leading public and private collections.
