Mircea Ciobanu

Mircea Ciobanu (b. 1940, Pitești – d. 1996, Bucharest) was a Romanian visual artist and writer, known for his deeply symbolic work, situated at the intersection of spirituality, myth, and expressionism. Although more widely known to the general public for his literary activity — as a poet, essayist, and translator — Ciobanu also had a remarkable visual artistic career, especially in the fields of painting and graphics.
His art explores existential and religious themes, reflecting an intense inner vision where the human and the sacred meet in a meditative register. His works are dominated by archetypal figures — saints, prophets, angels, but also ordinary people — depicted in a serious, austere manner, often with dense brushstrokes and sober chromaticism, in harmony with the depth of the subjects addressed.
