Jean David

Jean David (1908–1993) was a Romanian painter, set designer, and graphic artist of Jewish origin, a prominent figure in modern Romanian art and a profoundly European spirit. Born in Bucharest, he trained at the School of Fine Arts, continuing his studies in Paris, where he came into contact with the interwar avant-garde and the artistic effervescence of the 1930s.

Jean David's work is characterized by refined chromatic sensitivity and balanced composition, in which the real and the imaginary coexist in a poetic dialogue. The artist explored a wide range of themes – from landscapes and still lifes to urban, symbolic, or dreamlike scenes – all filtered through a modern plastic language, influenced by Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

His decorative and graphic works are particularly interesting, in which line and color acquire the value of a sign. He created numerous posters, illustrations, and mural compositions, distinguished by the elegance of form and the subtlety of visual construction. After settling in Israel in 1964, Jean David continued to paint and exhibit, consolidating his international reputation.

Through his lyrical vision, balanced between tradition and modernity, Jean David remained an artist of joy and color, a builder of serene worlds where balance and emotion harmoniously coexist. His work represents one of the most coherent and luminous contributions to Romanian modernism of the 20th century.
