George Demetrescu Mirea

George Demetrescu Mirea (1852–1934) was one of the most important Romanian painters during the formative period of modern art, appreciated for his academic rigor, elegant compositions, and sensitive portraits. Born in Câmpulung Muscel, Mirea studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest under Theodor Aman, and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by the realist style and the French academic school.

His work includes portraits, historical compositions, allegorical scenes, and landscapes, all executed with precise drawing and a refined color palette. His portraits, characterized by great psychological subtlety, capture not only physical resemblance but also the nobility and dignity of his subjects, being considered among the most representative in Romanian painting of the late 19th century.

Mirea also distinguished himself as an author of monumental paintings, creating large-scale works for important institutions, including the Romanian Athenaeum, the National Military Circle, and the University of Bucharest. These frescoes and mural compositions express a grandiose yet balanced vision, combining patriotic ideals with artistic refinement.

As a professor and later director of the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, George Demetrescu Mirea had a decisive influence on the training of young Romanian artists.

Today, he is recognized as a master of Romanian academic painting, an artist of balance, discipline, and classical beauty, who contributed fundamentally to the affirmation of modern national art.
