Victor Schivert

Victor Schivert (1863, Iași – 1926, Munich) was a Romanian painter with an academic background, belonging to the generation of artists who solidified the connection between Romanian and European art at the end of the 19th century. The son of painter Albert Schivert, Victor grew up in an artistic environment, and this family legacy defined his professional path.

After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Iași, he continued his training at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich, where he was a student of Master Otto Seitz. Here, he came into contact with the German realist movement and the academic tendencies of the era, which profoundly influenced his style.

His work includes genre scenes, portraits, female nudes, and historical compositions, treated with remarkable meticulousness and a balanced chromatic palette. Schivert distinguished himself through his ability to capture the social atmosphere of the era — tavern interiors, elegant gatherings, introspective faces — lending a refined theatricality to his scenes.

His drawing is precise, his composition rigorous, and his play of light reveals the influence of the Munich school. In portraits and nudes, the artist explores the beauty of form and emotional expression with a sense of balance and classical harmony.

Today, Victor Schivert is appreciated for his contribution to the professionalization of Romanian painting and for the way he combined German academism with Romanian aesthetic sensibility, leaving an elegant and coherent body of work, situated between rigorous realism and the poetry of the figurative.
