Corneliu Medrea (1888–1964) was one of the most important Romanian sculptors of the 20th century, an artist who contributed decisively to the modernization of Romanian sculpture and the consolidation of a national artistic identity. Born in Miercurea Sibiului, Medrea studied in Budapest and Vienna, being trained in a solid academic context, yet also receptive to the modernist currents of the time.
His work stands out for its balance between tradition and modernity, for the expressive power of volume, and for its sensitivity to the human subject. Medrea created an extensive series of works — portraits, allegorical compositions, public monuments, and scenes inspired by rural life — in which he naturally and nobly conveys the dignity of the human being.
Among his most famous works are "The Little Shepherd," "Youth," "Maternity," "Roman Rider," as well as numerous monuments erected in Bucharest, Alba Iulia, and other cities in the country. Medrea's sculpture is characterized by vigorous modeling and clarity of form, by a classical beauty filtered through modern sensibility.
As a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, he influenced entire generations of artists, being recognized for his exacting standards and devotion to art.
Today, Corneliu Medrea is considered an emblematic figure of Romanian sculpture, an artist of balance and harmony, who managed to express through bronze, marble, and stone the strength and dignity of the human spirit. The museum named after him in Bucharest preserves an important part of his artistic legacy.
