Margareta Sterian (1897–1992) is one of the most sensitive and autonomous voices of Romanian modernism. A painter, set designer, illustrator, and writer, Sterian built her own poetic universe, where color, line, and symbol meet in a discreet, melancholic, and deeply human expression. Her training, divided between the Bucharest art scene and contact with French modernity, refined her taste for synthesis and clear compositions, where the essential takes precedence over descriptive detail.
Her painting combines lyrical expressionism with a naive-symbolic touch, generating recognizable images: still lifes with flowers, silent interiors, windows open to the city, mask-like characters, clowns, or fragile silhouettes captured in simple gestures. The palette, sometimes muted, sometimes vibrant with pure accents, conveys a deep emotion; the drawing subtly emphasizes forms, and the spaces remain airy, almost musical. In parallel, the artist created drawings, collages, and book illustrations, as well as theater costumes and sets, transferring the same poetry of essences into the language of the stage.
Far from grandiloquent rhetoric, Sterian proposes an art of intimacy and affective memory: a visual diary of small things – a bouquet, a drape, a small table, a window – elevated to the status of symbols. The coherence of this world, preserved over decades, explains the public's constant attraction to her work.
Today, Margareta Sterian is regarded as a classic of modern discretion: an artist who proved that, in painting, strength lies not in stridency, but in the delicate balance between color, silence, and the inner truth of the image.
