Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) was an American painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, one of the founders and main representatives of the Pop Art movement – a movement that revolutionized visual art in the second half of the 20th century. Trained at Ohio State University, Lichtenstein debuted as a figurative artist, but in the early 1960s, he defined his unmistakable style, inspired by the language of comic strips, advertisements, and mass culture.
His work is based on the ironic reinterpretation of popular imagery through a precise and recognizable technique. Lichtenstein used Ben-Day dots, strong black outlines, and primary colors – red, yellow, blue – to aesthetically recreate the typographic visual of print media. Iconic works such as Whaam!, Drowning Girl, and Hopeless transformed the banality of commercial images into refined and intellectual art.
In addition to painting, Lichtenstein was an innovator in the fields of engraving, screen printing, and sculpture, exploring the relationship between mechanical reproduction and artistic originality. Through this endeavor, he raised essential questions about the status of art in an era dominated by consumerism and mass media.
His seemingly impersonal style conceals a profound analysis of visual perception and contemporary culture. Today, Roy Lichtenstein is considered a classic of modern art, and his works, exhibited in major museums around the world, continue to inspire through irony, clarity, and an aesthetic that unites high art with popular culture.
