Milița Petrașcu

Milița Petrașcu (1892–1976) was one of the most important female figures in 20th-century Romanian art – a sculptor, portraitist, and visual artist of profound originality. Born in Chișinău, Petrașcu began her studies at the Odesa School of Fine Arts, continuing them later in Munich and at the Academy of Arts in Paris, where she was a disciple of the great artists Antoine Bourdelle and Constantin Brâncuși.

Influenced by them, as well as by the European modernist spirit, Milița Petrașcu developed her own artistic language, in which expressive force intertwines with formal balance and a deeply human sensibility. Her work includes monumental sculptures, portraits, busts, reliefs, and symbolic compositions, created in bronze, stone, or terracotta.

Her portraits of Romanian intellectuals and artists are famous – among them, representations of Constantin Brâncuși, Lucian Blaga, Liviu Rebreanu, and Tudor Arghezi stand out – in which the artist manages to capture the spiritual essence of the subject, beyond physical features. In parallel, she created works of great decorative and monumental power, among which the Mausoleum of Mărășești holds a central place.

Milița Petrașcu's style is rigorous and synthetic, close to modern European sculpture, yet retaining a distinctively Romanian spiritual depth.

Today, Milița Petrașcu is recognized as a pioneer of modernism in Romanian sculpture, an artist who combined feminine sensibility with monumental strength, leaving a landmark body of work for the national artistic heritage.
