Paul Scortescu

Paul Scorțescu (1895–1976) was a Romanian painter with a European vocation, whose career mostly unfolded in France. Settling in the Parisian art scene, he refined his language into a modern figurative register, where light, brushstroke rhythm, and chromatic harmonies become structural elements of the image. The maritime and urban landscapes of Southern France — ports, terraces, hills, Mediterranean bays — are recurring themes, approached with a free, airy touch that captures the vibration of the atmosphere and the time of day.

In parallel, Scorțescu created still lifes and interiors with clear sensitivity: vases with flowers, fruits, and domestic objects are arranged in clear, balanced compositions, where color does not aim for spectacular effect but for the discreet breath of light.
