DOCUMENTARY DATA

Emil Volkers (1831-1905) is one of Germany's most famous equestrian painters. He received commissions from the aristocrats of the time and even from George V, King of Hanover, so his works came to decorate famous palaces in Germany. Becoming renowned for his paintings, he also attracted the attention of Prince Carol I of Hohenzollern.

Carol gathered documentary painters to depict his travels through the country or on battlefields. Among them was Emil Volkers, who created his first paintings in the Romanian Principalities immediately after 1866, the year Carol I's reign began.

In addition to lithographs with King Carol I and oil paintings with scenes from the War of Independence, Emil Volkers also created ethnographic paintings with Romanian peasants and rustic landscapes from our country, in which he captured the beauty of traditional costume and the importance of the horse in the daily life of the peasant.
