Baptiste Homann (1664-1724) was a German engraver and cartographer born in Nuremberg. In 1702, he founded his own publishing house, and in 1715, he was appointed imperial geographer by Emperor Charles VI due to the success of his works. In the same year, he was also made a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. In 1716, Homann published his most important work, "The Great Atlas of the Entire World," to which the present piece belongs, from a 1723 edition. In the upper left corner, there is a richly decorated cartouche with allegorical figures that includes the title and printing details. Hand-colored copper engraving after printing.
