DOCUMENTARY DATA

With a prolific artistic career, Jules Perahim distinguished himself both on the Romanian and French avant-garde scene and in Romanian socialist painting. In the 1930s-1940s, he collaborated with the most important artistic and literary nuclei in Romania – UNU, ALGE, alongside other prominent artists and writers such as Victor Brauner, Jacques Herold, Gherasim Luca, etc. His early surrealist paintings, from the exhibition in Bucharest (1938), vehemently opposed repressive agents and leadership through violent images set in a fantastic framework. After the communist period, in which he conformed to the state-imposed socialist-realism, Perahim returned to his passion, surrealist painting. The fantastic world created by the artist fascinates with its fabulous bestiary, featuring numerous varieties of animals and plants, hypnotizing and vast landscapes, all rendered in vivid, exotic chromatics. This exoticism of Perahim's forms and colors is influenced by African culture, from which he drew inspiration after his trip to South Africa. The vitality of his works comes from the universal communication between elements, like a hybridization of all existing life forms.
